A Letter to my Native Brothers and Sisters

All of us are God-seekers, whether we realize it or not… I have thankfully been able to make my peace with God through the acceptance of the awesome gift of his Son, my Lord and Saving Grace, Jesus Christ… the One who came in the flesh, was crucified and raised again to heaven so I might be saved -- once for all eternity, and many times daily.

Because as weak as I am in my human frailty, God is strong whenever and wherever I am weak… and because I am “in Christ” I can overcome as He has overcome… by the blood of the Lamb, the word of my testimony, and I love not my life even unto death...

Gal. 2:20 "I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.”

And because I am seated with Christ in heavenly places, far above the powers of darkness and wisdom of man (Ephes 2:6, Ephes 1:20-22), I live, pray, and worship from a place of victory… He says in His word, “In this world you will have trouble, but do not let your heart be troubled, for I have overcome the world.” John 16:33

I know that my brown-skinned Native American brothers and sisters were horribly mistreated by many white-skinned Europeans when they came to the US and Canada, in fact, they tried to wipe you out… and for this, I am deeply sorrowful… (people do all sorts of horrible things for reasons I hope I never fully understand…)

I also know that later on, many white-skinned people, who called themselves Christians but did NOT represent the Christ I know (the One who gave His life so we might live)… those hypocrites forcibly took many, many children from their brown-skinned Native American families and made them live at boarding schools where they horribly mistreated them… all in the “name” of “Christianity”… this was reprehensible and I cannot say enough how sorry I am…

I am also aware that the reservations my brown-skinned Native Americans have been forced to live on are a poor substitute for the land you were forced to leave, and that for the most part, white-skinned Europeans who are now US and Canadian citizens, have ignored and neglected you while we carry on with our own lives, and while we, over the years, have extended care for the needs of impoverished people living in third-world countries on the other side of the world, have pretty much left you to fend for yourselves, never giving you a second thought, after we have stripped you of your identity, your dignity, your hope, even your God-given need to worship the Lord the way He created you to….

I can never say I’m sorry enough to even begin to make up for all these atrocities… but I pray you can find a way to forgive these horrible abuses and the people who did them to you and your ancestors, because I know how God LOVES you, how  He rejoices over you, how much He longs to have intimate relationship with you, and how He LONGS to hear and see your beautiful expression of worship unto Him released into the earth… to see you be released to be all He created you to be, and do all He created you to do… and believe it or not, the world needs what He’s put in you, now more than ever.

And I want to point out what may seem obvious to some but not others… like it or not, there have been thousands, even millions of white-skinned, black-skinned, yellow-skinned people who have been born in the US and Canada, who are also “Native Americans” – I happen to be one of the white-skinned ones.

We know our ancestors all came here from somewhere else, even the ancestors of our brown-skinned Native Americans who were here before most of us arrived (smile)… because when God created “man” He started with a man and woman in the Garden of Eden, somewhere on the other side of the world…

None of this world really belongs to any one of us, anyway, it’s all His… we just get to borrow it for awhile, before our life here ends and we stand before Him on the day that we give an account for the way we lived our lives here… and for those of us who have come to know and trust Him as Lord and Savior, He takes us home to be with Him in heaven forever…how glorious!

So I believe it’s our job as members of the human race, to make peace with our Creator by accepting the awesome, free gift of Jesus’ shed blood… and keep the “main thing the main thing” – that is to know Him and make Him known (smile)

I have also seen that our nation is undergoing a LOT of turmoil right now! It is obvious from the actions of those in office that the leadership in our government is not taking the needs of our people into consideration when forcing its legislation down our throats.  It is also obvious that the man in oval office is a Muslim, and make no mistake about it, people who embrace the Muslim faith “hate” Americans (I know this from personal experience working for a mission agency with 400 missionaries in Muslim countries) – they call us the “Infidel” and are under a twisted mandate from their “god” to kill all Americans…

I believe this ungodly influence in our government is God’s judgment on us because of the way we have “hated” our brown-skinned Native Americans.  I also believe that God’s mercy still triumphs over judgment, and as we “hit our knees” in repentance and seek His face, He WILL forgive us and heal our land (2 Chron 7:14).

I have also seen God’s judgment in another way. I grew up in a small town in the Midwest, where people grew organic crops (there were no pesticides to worry about, in fact, they weren’t allowed), raised and ate grass-fed beef, range-free chickens and eggs, and drank raw milk… and we were a LOT healthier and happier than we’ve become over the last 100 years or so…

Then big corporations came and drove out many of the small farmers and ranchers and took over raising the crops and animals, and over the years, much of the life as we once knew it in “farm” country has ceased to exist.

I encourage folks as often as I can to “restore the lost arts” – you know the things our parents taught us that we forgot to pass on to our kids – things like how to sew, knit, quilt, how to prepare and cook healing foods, how to fix your car, how to do basic carpentry and fix things around the house, how to grow organic gardens, how to ride a horse, how to work hard and enjoy it (smile).

Now, as most of us know, most of the food that is available in mainstream grocery stores is polluted, poisoned, and so “highly processed” that it no longer contains the nutrients our bodies so desperately need, and contains other ingredients our bodies never needed, and we have more health problems in the US and other places where people eat such contaminated food, than ever before in the history of the world.

The “real” food and pure water is still out there, and I strongly urge everyone reading this to do whatever it takes to seek it out and eat it, so your health can be restored…

I believe what has happened in our Midwest, which used to be the “backbone of the country” in supplying beef, milk and crops, not only to the US, but other countries as well, is part of the consequences we are suffering because of our continued mistreatment of our brown-skinned Native Americans.  Jesus called us to be the “salt of the earth”, and the “light of the world” – but our light has gone out and we have lost our flavor, our “saltiness” –

What is the answer?

2 Chron 7:14 – “If My people, who are called by My name, will humble themselves and pray, seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, forgive your sins and heal your land.”

Speak the truth in love, embrace one another, lift each other higher than ourselves – in short, love one another the way Jesus loved the church.

Do what we can to make our world a better place, and NEVER stop praying, trusting God to turn things around… there are many instances in the Bible where people suffered under evil leadership, but when the people prayed, God answered and brought Godly leadership to take authority and then the people prospered again…

Those of us who know Jesus have His light inside us and it’s our job to shine that light into a dark world and dispel the darkness… be a beacon of hope, because God is STILL on the throne, and He’s not worried!  He’s not taking sides, either… He’s taking over…

He IS establishing His kingdom on the earth as it is in heaven, and He’s doing it through His followers – all who trust in His name and have an ear to hear… in the book of Daniel, a rock formed without hands (which represents Jesus, the revealed word of God) crushes the statue which represents the kingdom of man, then that same rock, the glory of God, His kingdom, increases and fills the whole earth with His glory…

That’s what God’s doing and I’m betting on HIM! All my eggs are in one basket and there’s no Plan B for me… it’s all or nothing!  The good news is I read the end of the book and I already know He wins, so I have nothing to worry about.  I also know that when my life here is over, I go to be with Him forever in paradise, so I have nothing to fear… He’s given me a future and a hope, His plans for me are for GOOD and not evil… in fact, His goodness overcomes evil… His kindness leads us to repentance, He turns the hearts of kings as the waterways… nothing’s too hard for Him and His arm is not too short…

He really IS everything He says He is… and He is faithful to complete the good work He’s begun in all our lives if we will just trust Him… He IS trustworthy, and He will always be faithful because it’s who He is… He will also always be loving, forgiving, gracious, merciful, all powerful, all knowing, omnipotent, omnipresent, omniscient… ancient of days, alpha and omega… awesome God, loving Father, Lord of Lords, Jesus our Messiah…

And for the record, I have such a deep-seated love for my brown-skinned Native American brothers and sisters, maybe because I know how much our Father in heaven LOVES you, how much He loves to see and hear your beautiful, unique expression of love and adoration through your worship of Him… in fact, I KNOW without a doubt, how much He LOVES it when His people come together from different tribes and nations to worship Him, because I’ve experienced it (a first-taste of what it will be like in heaven, I think J, and it’s by far, my favorite place to be (smile),,,

I love the sound of Native drums and flutes, and the honor you give Father Creator when you dance in the regalia that you so lovingly and beautifully created, the beautiful prayer shawls and every step a prayer as you move into glorious worship of the only One true God, the only One who is truly worthy of all our praise and honor and glory and majesty… in fact, the brown-skinned Native Americans I know, I would trust with my life… which is more than I can say of a lot of white people I’ve known.

I have had an affinity for my brown-skinned Native American brothers and sisters for as long as I can remember and have been praying for you for over 20 years…

The horse I rode (mostly bareback) as a teenager was a beautiful paint (the prettiest one I’ve ever seen)… half Welch, half Arabian, with a beautiful spirit.  He and I had such a special bond that no one else had with him.  His name, of course, was “Chief” – my favorite memory of him was riding him bareback right into a small lake with a very shallow beach… we rode in, swam around for awhile, then rode back out… it was so amazing.

About 9 years ago, I had the rare honor and privilege of being ceremonially adopted by a wonderful Native American couple from Scio, OR who I love very much… Perry and Rae Evans, two of the most genuine, loving people you’ll ever meet… mighty in God and always loving His people (of every color)… they are also powerful intercessors who have been praying for our nation for a very long time. Perry is Cherokee, and Rae is Lakota from the Rosebud Rez in South Dakota.  My Lakota name is “Wakan Lowan” which means Holy Singer.   I love you both very much and I’m so very grateful that you didn’t reject me long ago when some stranger from North Dakota reached out to you in love.

I have dual citizenship (US and Canada), as my Mom was born in Canada, and Grandpa John lived in the Yukon Territory for about 20 years as a miner and trapper (and “camp cook”), so the things I’m believing for the US, I am also believing for Canada… I’ve always loved Canada, it’s in my DNA… and it’s so incredibly beautiful… When I was young, I had the privilege of being a part of an International Music Camp at the International Peace Garden on the border between the US and Canada (which just happens to be in North Dakota where I grew up (smile).

If you look at things in the natural, it’s easy to see that we are in a world of hurt… but if you see things through the eyes of Jesus, you see hope, restoration, healing, deliverance, redemption, mercy, love, forgiveness, newness of life… because that’s who He is… and He’ll never stop being who He is…

He’ll never stop loving us, He’ll never leave us or forsake us, He’ll never stop cheering us on to take the next step, and the one after that, and the one after that, always for all eternity… for those of us who have come to accept His amazing gift of salvation and grace, we will spend all of eternity with Him and still never know how much He loves us… His love will always be way more than we can fathom…

He promises us many things; two of which I stand on every day:

  1. As long as we keep our mind on Him, He WILL keep us in His perfect peace -- no matter what’s going on around us – remember when Peter walked on the water, He was only able to stay on top of the water as long as his eyes were on Jesus…
  1. And whenever we commit our way to Him, He will make our path straight…

I intend to do both as I continue on this journey, doing what He puts in front of me to do, trusting Him with everything and everyone else.

Shalom.
